What is a Door Alarm?

What are the operational principles of door alarm sensors?   

A door alarm sensor operates by sensing a change in its surroundings, usually brought about by an opened or tampered-with door. The particular working principle of each type of sensor is different; however, the following are the fundamental ideas behind two popular kinds:

Contact Detectors:

This kind of contact sensor is frequently seen in door alarms. It is made up of a switch and a magnet. Typically, the magnet is mounted on the door itself, and the switch is mounted on the door frame. The magnet pulls away from the switch when the door is opened, cutting the circuit and setting off the alarm.

Motion Detectors:

Motion sensors that detect changes in infrared radiation within their detection range are known as infrared (IR) sensors. The sensor senses a change in heat signature when an object or person moves in front of it, setting off an alarm.

How to install a recessed door alarm sensor?  

Step 1: Select Sensor Location

Choose at which position the sensor would be nailed to the door and another one on the frame. With the door closed, ensure that the two parts are in line.

Step 2: Mark Drill Holes

Identify the location of the door and its frame where it is to have a sensor and magnet, respectively. Confirm that the alignment is accurate to ensure maximum performance.

Step 3: Fit the sensor

Installation is not as complicated because you just need to place the sensor firmly into the door’s opening and magnet entirely into the opening of its frame. Have them ascertained that they are well placed in such a way when the door is opened, the spring will be off and opening of contacts between it.

Step 4: Secure Sensors

The screws that are provided in the magnetic sensor help to hold it onto the sensor by tightening them. Make sure they are tightened, i.e., flush against both the door and frame.

Step 5: Check the Installation

If the door slams shut, this means that the sensor and magnet are allowing. Check that, when opening the door, activate the alarm system.

How to replace the battery in a door alarm sensor? 

1. Learn how your specific sensor is able to tap the battery power. In some cases, a door alarm sensor may be provided with a removable cover, while others fail to provide the battery compartment mechanism. 

2. If there is a battery bay, open it using a screwdriver. If the cover is detachable, you should remove it according to the instructions inside the user manual would provide.

3. Open the window to access the old battery and remove it. However, this orientation is observable on each battery and not all of them have the positive (+) and negative (-) terminal at the same spot.

4. Refer to the marks inside the container and ensure that you have correctly attached the new battery in such a way that it has a positive end slotted towards a positive point on the contacts while the negative is slotted into negative contact points.

How to stop the door alarm from beeping? 

1. Enter the Access Code: If your door alarm system has a keypad, you can disarm it by entering the relevant access code. To locate the correct code, consult the alarm system manufacturer’s instructions or user handbook.

2. Use a Key or Key Fob: Using the key or a key fob, you can disable some of the door alarm systems. It is convenient to make the beeping stop by using the key, in addition to that, it can also be stopped by using a key fob.

3. Remote Control: It is possible to deactivate your door alarm system using a remote if it is one of the systems that constitute a larger security complex. Refer to the user guide on how to perform.

4. Change the Battery or Silence It: If the door alarm sensor beeps for a low battery warning, you do not have to worry about changing its battery every two years. As an alternative, one can also activate the mute or silence button on the alarm panel so as to allow for some time in silence.
